Over 37,000 people in the United States die in road crashes each year, where an additional 2.4 million are injured or disabled. Imagine living in a world where cars alerted us when there was imminent danger or automatically intervened and assisted the driver in a critical situation.
Well, we are one step closer in achieving fewer vehicle crashes with the opening of the brand new General Motors Active Safety Test Area (ASTA), where safety engineers will utilize the facility to develop and test some of the industry’s most advanced crash-avoidance technologies. Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac will already offer twenty-two of these innovative safety features in their 2016 lineup.
Some examples of available crash-avoidance technologies include:
– Low Speed Front Automatic Braking – If system detects a front end collision, it will automatically apply braking to help reduce collision severity
– Front Pedestrian Braking – When the driver approaches a detected pedestrian directly ahead, the system alerts the driver to avoid or reduce injury
– Surround Vision Recorder – Allows the driver to record, store and playback a video of the images recorded by the vehicle’s Surround Vision feature cameras
